Debian : Public key not available warning

January 5th, 2006

The new apt-get (>=0.6.42) introduced package authentication in order to improve security (supports verifying signed apt repositories). You can still install non-authenticated packages, but if you want to take advantage of this feature follow the procedure below, using gpg, an encryption and signing tool. Please note that not all the deb repositories implemented this feature, if you upgrade from such a repository you'll get a "packages could not be authenticated" warning.

If you encounter following kind of warning (when running apt-get update) :

W: GPG error: ftp://ftp.belnet.be testing Release: The following signatures couldn't be veri
ailable: NO_PUBKEY 010908312D230C5F

Follow the procedure below :

# open console terminal, type su and root password
# gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 2D230C5F
# gpg --armor --export 2D230C5F | apt-key add -
# apt-get update

If you encounter following kind of warning (when running apt-get update) :

W: GPG error: http://secure-testing.debian.net etch/security-updates Release: The following signatures couldn't
be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 946AA6E18722E71E
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

Follow the procedure below :

# Open console terminal, type su and root password
# wget http://secure-testing.debian.net/ziyi-2005-7.asc -O - | apt-key add -
# apt-get update

If you have other sources in sources.list file, you can get the key for them in a similar manner, just look for the key number in the error message.

Tips & Tricks

December 25th, 2005

A few tips & tricks about 'blog reading' for 2006 :

1. use a 'rss reader' to follow the changes on my blog
2. use the 'bot a blog' feature which results in a notification in your mail box each time my blog will be modified in the future

In case of questions, just post a comment and things will be clarified.

Nice quote

Reading a book discussing some MySQL facts and figures, I encountered the following well written quote :

In life as in code, regardless of the circumstances under which two things join together, it is rarely a simple thing, and more often than not, it comes with conditions and consequences

Gizmo versus Skype ?

December 5th, 2005

Gizmo is a program that can be compared with the well known program Skype. You can talk for free with other Gizmo users; for a certain amount of money, you can call normal telephone numbers (CallOut) or being called from normal telephone numbers (CallIn, not supported for Belgium for the moment).

Gizmo

1. Sound effects - Add Sound Effects to your calls. Open the Dialpad at the bottom of Gizmo Project window and press the emoticon button during a call. You can choose other sounds (or upload your own) from the options menu.
2. Check call quality - Click for the Call Quality Assitant to see bandwidth quality.
3. Pick online status. Green: Available, Red: Away/Do not disturb, Orange: Idle, Blue: On the phone, Grey: Invisible/Offline
4. Online status. Gives the current status of all your contacts.
5. Click Map It to view map of call locations. Get a detailed map of the location of each call.
6. Instant Messaging (IM) - Chat instantly with your contacts.
7. Person being called receives call subject. Let them know immediately the purpose of your call.
8. You can record any call on your Gizmo Project phone with the click of a button. The call record button is in the active call window, next to the mute and hold buttons.
9. Type in Gizmo name or number here to make a call. Gizmo to Gizmo call always free. You can also call any traditional phone using Call Out.

Each Gizmo member will have his own personal SIP number, which can be contact by other SIP based programs. Gizmo is available for both the Windows 2000/XP users and the Linux users.

Which one is the best, Gizmo or Skype ? I will come back on this debate later, when I have built up more experience with the Gizmo project. For those interested, just give it a try, install Gizmo ! You can add my sip number (1-747-600-6046) into your Gizmo contact list. I would like to try it out the next coming weeks / months !

The fact that Skype isn't alone anymore is a good thing ! This will make sure Skype will continue improving it's services, sound quality, etc.
