Windows Genuine Advantage
From today onwards, people who going to download files or programs from Windows Update, Microsoft Update or the Download Center are required to validate their Windows XP, in order to check if they are running a legal or illegal Windows XP. The program used for the validation is Windows Genuine Advantage. For the people with an illegal Windows XP, Microsoft is still providing security updates for free.
Microsofts intention is to make life more difficult for people with illegal copies of Windows XP, and forcing people in the direction of buying a legal copy. As a compensation Microsoft offers from now onwards some free software which is available from the Windows Update Center after passing succesfully the Windows Genuine Advantage program. I hope Linux will gain some extra marketshare, because a lot of people will start thinking about moving towards Linux. A lot of Linux distributions are available for all kind of people, like Fedora, Suse and Mandriva for the beginner, Debian for the ICT expert and Gentoo for the real nerds.
By the way, it seems I have a valide version of Windows XP ! Some extra screenshots can be found on the next page.
