The Internet Tablet versus the UMPC
What's hot these days, as mentioned on Cebit, the UMPC, the Ultra Mobile PC, sometimes also called a Origami Tablet PC.
The Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) addresses these needs with small, stylish products you can carry with you everywhere you go. The UMPC devices offer ultra-portable sizes and long battery life, plus full PC and Internet capabilities, so you can access your favorite web pages anytime, virtually anywhere!
The UMPC, it's an interesting new development, curious to see how this will proceed. Currently having the impression that the size of the devices is too big, the weight of the devices is too heigh and the available functionality inside is a bit overkill. It seems to be a portable pc without keyboard and less power.
This kind of device is for sure usefull for some people, however, a lot of people are just looking for a small device providing easy internet access which has a fair price; not really looking for a complete pc or portable pc replacement.
Wondering what the price setting will be, 600 EUR or more for a UMPC, it's worth this amount of EUR ?
Anyhow, the Nokia Internet Tablet is still a great device, no matter what the Microsoft marketing campaign will tell the end user.
The Nokia 770 has it (almost) all, ... internet connectivity, beautiful screen, the appropriate size, the appropriate price, very good battery life, capability to listen to streaming audio, to watch movies, listen to music, voip (very) soon... and last but not least, it has a Linux OS inside, so less viruses, less spyware, ... and finally a great community behind.
Of course, it's good to have more such devices on the market. Finally, the end user will benefit from the competition between different vendors, between different visions. These kind products will evolve much the coming years, cuurious to see how the Internet Tablet will look like in 2008 (not so far from now, isn't it ;-) ).
