Nokia Internet Tablet - N800 (part 5)
Maemo 4.0 Chinook is the next stable release after the recently released maemo 3.2 Bora. Even if this is a major release bringing deep changes and enhancements, it is fully supported by the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet hardware. It is also confirmed that Diablo, the next release after Chinook, will be also supported by the Nokia N800. Maemo will provide compatibility details about Elephanta and next releases as soon as they confirm them.
Main conclusion and the good news, the N800 Nokia Internet Tablets will be able to make use of the advantages of the future Maemo software platforms like Maemo Chinook and Diablo.
Dixit Maemo News : There might be still exceptions in the mid term, due to deep hardware related challenges and upstream decisions, but we will make our best announcing them as soon as possible, providing details, tools and time for developers to react. Our aim is to provide a platform as stable and compatible as PC developers are used to in the main operating systems. The fact is, though, that PC hardware and core PC software components have a longer history and in many cases a less constrained environment than the Internet Tablets. We deal with this young and demanding context, we understand the direct comparisons and we do our best to match these expectations. It is not a simple task, though.
Small note for the Nokia Internet Tablet 770 owners. Currently work is ongoing to update the Internet Tablet OS 2007 Hacker Edition for the Nokia 770 to match as closely as possible the latest IT OS release for the N800 and fix outstanding bugs. Increasingly functional updates will be available for download and flashing by Nokia 770 owners. Sadly the odds of getting Skype to work with the 770 are low, because of lacking working codecs for the OMAP 1710 processor.
