Internet Tablets versus smartphones
“Forrester believes that a new category — mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) — will deliver on the promise of the mobile Internet but as an additional, rather than replacement, device. To succeed, the PC and wireless industries must blend the best of what they have.
To the smart players will come billions in new revenues as consumers add a third device to their lives.”
That's the question a lot of people ask themselves these days. What kind of communication devices do I need ? Possible solutions could be:
A. Portable PC & smartphone or Blackberry
B. Fixed PC & smartphone or blackberry
C. Portable PC & mobile phone or Blackberry & Internet Tablet (MID)
D. Fixed PC & mobile phone or Blackberry & Internet Tablet (MID)
E. Fixed PC & portable PC & ...
F. ...
Which solution is the best ? I can't say. I depends on a lot of things like who you are, where you live, what your interests are, how much money you can spent, what you need for private and professional life, ...
I am using Internet Tablets for about 2 years now, what do I do with these kind of MIDs ?
*** Daily / very often ****
- internet browsing, rss and email reading (typically during breakfast, lost or short moments in the evening)
- reading documents or listening music (typically on the train, airplane, ...)
- listening to audio books
- watching movies (typically late at night in bed)
- voip calls using Google Talk and Skype (typically when I need to talk to someone who is online too), it would be nice if Skype could also become as integrated as Google Talk
**** sometimes ****
- listening to the radio
- making notes during external meeting using bluetooth keyboard
**** never****
- playing games
A few remarks with respect to this list above. One of the most interesting features of the MIDs is the 'always on' functionality. In fact I never turn my MID off, meaning it's always available for usage without waiting until the device has gone through it's boot process. Since it's mainly used as a browsing device, the screen quality and size are extremely important ! Currently smartphones doesn't have this kind of high quality screen. That's one of the main reasons why I assume that MIDs has a market potential ! Who knows the fourth or fifth generation of the MIDs will have also 'phone' functionalities included, ... .
And sometimes, when going with friends to a pub, I just prefer to carry a very small and basic cellphone, nothing more, nothing less !
